The Institute for Sustainable Forestry and the Southern Humboldt School District announce a public viewing of a local miller using a small swing blade mill to make lumber out of a redwood tree that used to grace the lawn of South Fork High School.
Next Monday and Tuesday, May 13 and 14, between 12:30 and 4 pm, come watch Marc Lichterman and his crew mill a redwood tree into redwood lumber in front of the old Junior High at 6831 Avenue of the Giants in Miranda.
The public should maintain a safe distance from the work site and should not come onto the rest of the school grounds during school hours. Any volunteers who would like to assist the milling operation, including stacking lumber, clearing dust and edge slabs, will be asked to sign a liability waiver and follow all instructions from the milling crew. An interview with the miller, Marc Lichterman, can be found here.
The lumber will be used by the wood shop students for their projects and by the maintenance and grounds departments for making benches and tables. Special thanks to the South Fork High School staff and administration for enabling this project to unfold. Come watch lumber and saw dust fly off of round redwood logs, Monday and Tuesday, May 13 and 14, between 12:30 and 4 pm!
