Online Event to Provide Update on Klamath Dam Removal Process

In light of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s recent transfer of the dams and release of the final draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), Save California Salmon is hosting a virtual celebration and information rally this Thursday, March 24, at 6pm.

The event will feature speakers from the community as well as guests from the Karuk, Yurok and Hoopa Tribes, the Klamath Justice Coalition, American Rivers, and Swiftwater Films.

The event will feature the new short film Bring the Salmon Home from Swiftwater films, which was shot at various locations along the river during the 2021 Salmon Relay Run. Tribal representatives and community members will speak and an update from the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) will be provided. There will also be an opportunity to support dam removal by filing a comment with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

“Klamath River people worked for decades to get us to this point. Now we have a safe and quick plan to remove the Klamath dams,” stated Regina Chichizola, from Save California Salmon. “It should not have taken this long, but now that we are here the community should know how and when the dams will be removed. We also need to tell FERC to stop stalling, every year the salmon runs and juvenile fish kills get worse. The dam removal plan is on course to be approved by federal regulators later this year, but they need to know there is community support.”

Chichizola said she is excited that not only will all the local Tribes and organizations, including river youth, speak, but that the Klamath community will also be able to be the first to screen the new short film about the Salmon Relay Run.

One of the presenters will be Hoopa Valley Tribal youth and Arcata High School student LeMonie Hutt who explained she has been working for dam removal since she was eight years old because. “The removal of the Klamath Dams means the salmon can return home and that we can thrive on this land too.”
