Drax the Deforester

Drax power station in North Yorkshire, England, converted from coal to biomass

ISF returned to the airwaves on December 30 at 7 PM to challenge the extraction of living western US forests to make wood pellets for European bioenergy plants.

We were joined by Gary Graham Hughes, Americas Program Coordinator at Biofuelwatch, to talk about the collaboration between British company Drax and Golden State Natural Resources to expand industrial-scale wood pellet production into California. At this scale, wood pellet technology has a proven track record of exacerbating climate change, harming rural communities, and devastating forest ecosystems throughout North America—undermining GSNR’s claims of protecting and enhancing the environment and quality of life in California’s rural communities.

Here is a link to a four-minute Vimeo, “The Monster On the Horizon,” by Green America about the partnership between Drax and GSNR.

Also, here is a letter critiquing the GSNR DEIR for civil society organizations to sign on to. The deadline for public comment is Jan 20, 2025.
