Girdling Douglas-firs for Fuel Reduction and Habitat Restoration
Gray Shaw, chair of the Sustainable Forestry Journalism Project, presents a simple way to eliminate dangerous fuel by converting a wildfire hazard into a wildlife habitat. He explains what girdling is, how to do it and when, and how it helps the forest. Gray talks about his (then) seven years of experience girdling fir trees in the Salmon Creek watershed and how the landscape has changed as a result.
This show was presented live by phone to the KMUD studio, followed by call-in questions and recorded by the engineer.
The John McClelland video about girdling that was mentioned on the recording has moved; it can be found here instead.
