Biochar Emissions Project at Usal Forest

Here is a link to an earlier biochar event at Usal Forest with a map showing Duggan’s Opening.

Dear RFFI Community,

This is a really exciting week at the Usal Redwood Forest, as Karen Youngblood and the URFC staff prepare to begin on-site burning for the Biochar Emissions Project, in cooperation with the Sonoma Ecology Center and the USFS-Missoula Fire Science Lab.

If you’ve been to Usal this season you probably noticed the tidy rows of rectangular burn piles and the newly-built concrete burn pad at Duggan’s Opening, named Kun-Chu-ge’ Toh-be’ in Wailaki (“In the Meadow of Canyon Live Oak”). Burning will begin at the site this Wednesday, and continue until all of the piles have been converted to Biochar and measured.

We’re pleased to invite you to come observe the Biochar Burn next Tuesday, October 24th from 10am-4pm. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Biochar production from start to finish with regional experts, in a research context where different burning methods are being compared for their ability to retain or release carbon. It should be a fascinating day!

If you’d like to participate, please rsvp by replying to this email or sending a message to alicia@rffi.org. Make sure to prepare to safely observe the burn by wearing leather boots, long pants and long sleeves with the cuffs rolled down, eye protection, and long hair braided or tied back.

We look forward to seeing you on October 24!

Many thanks,

Alicia Bales
