Pole Structure Built at Sherwood Valley Rancheria

Building a shade structure with Douglas-fir poles harvested on the same property

ISF board member Eric Lassotovich, in his capacity as co-owner of Polecraft Solutions in Laytonville, created this shade structure at the new Sherwood Valley community garden with poles harvested on-site. Anna Hope Farporte, environmental director at Sherwood Valley Rancheria, secured grants for the project. Construction commenced at the end of April and took about a month and a half. There were anywhere from two to six people for most of it and many more later for the pole raising.

Peeled poles were treated with a 50/50 mix of pine tar and linseed oil, as a preservative.

Poles are attached to piers with 18” min. ground clearance by code

Assembly is done with joinery techniques

Temporary bracing holds it still during construction
