Red Mountain Project Tour
Saturday, May 30th, 2026 10 AM to 3 PM
An informative tour of the Red Mountain Forest Health Project which was planned by Jeff Hedin. This tour will be led by Jeff Hedin himself and will highlight the his planning and implementation processes. A review of the shaded fuel breaks created on Red Mountain Bureau of Land Management roads and scattered tracts, funded through a CalFire Healthy Forest grant, and administered by the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District. We will look at 2 to 3 yrs regrowth, shifts in floral patterns and habitat, etc... And we need to discuss how to maintain and enhance the work to date. Limited to 20 participants.

Kelly Paine Custom Milling Tour
Friday, June 5th, 2026 11:00 AM view operations while it’s running, Lunch and questions at 12:30, More afterwards until 2 PM
Tour Kelly Paine’s mill site in Piercy California. Come and see a small to medium size mill that processes 2nd growth redwood for fence boards and custom orders. This mill employs 10 employees and ships several trucks a month to Bay Area fence builders. They recently purchased a bio-char curtain burner to help them deal with all their slash. Limited to 20 participants.

August Complex Fire - Ruth Lake Campout
Saturday & Sunday, June 13th & 14th , 2026
2 day trip
Explore the effects of the August Complex fire on the ground at Ruth Lake with Susan Nolan and other ISF members. The 2020 August fire remains the largest wildfire in California history at over a million acres. Much was an ordinary mixed-severity burn. During a foehn wind event it became an unstoppable crown fire, killing all the conifers over many thousands of acres, including around Ruth. It blasted right through sites where the Forest Service had done extensive fuel reduction work.
